"The appeals court sided with a high school student who displayed a banner reading “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” during an Olympic torch relay in 2002. It ruled former Juneau-Douglas High School principal Deborah Morse violated former student Joseph Frederick’s free speech rights."

PENNSYLVANIA — A school district violated the First Amendment by suspending a student who created a satirical profile of his principal on MySpace.com, a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania ruled July 10.

Wow!  What a great meeting!  Thanks to everyone for conducting research and finding resources to help support our committee goal.  I'm excited to begin educating our parents by distributing brochures at Meet-Your-Teacher night.  Hopefully this will be the first step to raise awareness of reponsible and safe digital media and internet use.

I emailed the principals today to find out when each school's back-to-school night will be held.  At our next meeting, we will have sign-up sheets for our committee members to volunteer at the BTS nights.  Be thinking about what types of handouts and what info we want to give the parents.  Should we also provide student handouts?  Teacher handouts?

I am reviewing information called "A Parents Guide to myspace.com."  I will provide it for our next meeting.  This might be good information to have on hand for parents who want an overview of this soical network.

Thanks Shannon for taking on this project.  I have already learned a lot.  I included 3 websites with information on social networks.  They give some background on MySpace and Facebook along with a list of other social networks.
